Donald Trump Threatens Iran as Maritime Blockade Chokes Shipping

The United States Navy has rerouted 109 commercial vessels linked to Iran since reinstating a maritime blockade on July 14. This operation, monitored by U.S. Central Command, follows a previous blockade between April and June that saw 142 vessels rerouted and nine disabled. The blockade has severely disrupted global energy routes, with commodity vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz dropping to just three ships on September 23, well below the 10-day average of 15.

Donald Trump has escalated his rhetoric amid the standoff. On September 20, he warned that the U.S. could take "significant action" if Iran did not change its approach. By September 23, he stated he could "annihilate Iran" if no deal is reached to end the war. Despite these threats, the president noted that an agreement might be imminent due to diplomatic efforts at the United Nations.

While the primary confrontation centers on the Strait of Hormuz, shipping traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait has also remained below its 10-day average. President Trump has expressed openness to talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during the UN General Assembly in New York to resolve the conflict.
