Defense Secretary Hegseth Fires Top Pentagon Planner Amid Iran Tensions
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth fired Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia as President Donald Trump weighs renewed military strikes against Iran following upcoming midterm elections.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth fired Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia, the Pentagon's top military planner and director of the Directorate for Strategy, Plans, and Policy for the Joint Chiefs of Staff. While the Pentagon provided no official explanation, officials indicated Hegseth lost confidence in Sylvia, who reportedly clashed with Elbridge Colby, the department's third-highest leader.
Sylvia's removal is part of a broader leadership overhaul. Hegseth has overseen the departure of at least 26 admirals, generals, and senior civilian officials—including the secretaries of the Army and Navy—since taking office nearly two years ago. Hegseth has ordered a 20% reduction in top officer positions by January 1, 2027, characterizing the effort as accountability.
This personnel shift occurs as President Donald Trump considers relaunching military operations against Iran following next week's midterm elections. U.S. Central Command has prepared strike options targeting nuclear sites and economic assets, while a third aircraft carrier and additional troops deploy to the region. U.S. and Iranian forces remain in a standoff in the Strait of Hormuz.
Diplomatic efforts continue alongside military preparations. Vice President JD Vance reportedly contacted an Iranian hard-liner to revive peace talks. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated Tehran remains open to diplomacy and is reviewing a 7-Day Plan to restore maritime passage in the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the release of frozen assets and an end to hostilities. Meanwhile, some members of Congress have criticized the leadership changes as a purge of military leaders.
