U.S. Warns Canada Over Potential F-35 Jet Cancellation

The United States government has warned Canada that canceling its proposed purchase of 88 F-35 fighter jets would have serious consequences for continental security. U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra stated that abandoning the deal could threaten the NORAD alliance because the partnership requires interchangeable aircraft. Hoekstra further described the Canadian government's current review of the purchase as an irritant that is hindering a bilateral trade deal.

Mark Carney, the Prime Minister of Canada, ordered the review following economic pressure and threats to Canadian sovereignty from U.S. President Donald Trump. While the Canadian military recommends proceeding with the F-35s to maintain integration with U.S. forces, some retired military leaders now oppose the deal due to a lack of trust in the United States.

The review comes amid reports of systemic issues with the aircraft. A September 3 report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office revealed that the F-35 Block 4 version is at least $6 billion over budget and five years behind schedule. Defence Minister David McGuinty has committed to releasing the results of the review, with a final decision expected by September 22.
