Ukrainian Drone Strikes Disrupt Moscow Airports and Lugansk Infrastructure

Ukrainian drone attacks forced the closure of four Moscow airports and killed two people in the Lugansk region on October 23.

Ukrainian drone attacks on October 23 targeted both Russian-controlled territory in Ukraine and the Russian capital, causing casualties and significant aviation disruptions. In the Lugansk region, strikes on trucks and infrastructure killed two people and injured five. Attacks in Lugansk city destroyed server and switching equipment at the telecommunications operator Lugakom, disrupting mobile and internet services.

Simultaneously, drone strikes over Moscow forced the suspension of flights at Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo, and Zhukovsky airports. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that air defenses intercepted between 11 and 21 drones over two hours, leading to passenger evacuations at Sheremetyevo and the diversion of 25 flights to St. Petersburg. Russia's aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, implemented a carpet protocol to restrict airspace during the event.

These operations align with a strategy announced by Volodymyr Zelenskyy in September to make Russian airspace unsafe. In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned the warnings associated with these strikes as a threat of terrorism.
