Prime Minister Mark Carney Increases RCMP Funding Amid Scandals

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police faces an uncertain future following systemic racism, sexual harassment scandals, and critical public safety failures during mass killings in Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia. While former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau previously recommended the force abandon local policing to focus exclusively on national security, current Prime Minister Mark Carney has rejected structural reforms in favor of financial investment.

Carney has increased cadet pay and committed an additional 1.8 billion dollars to the policing budget over the next four years. This funding surge is driven partly by pressure from the Donald Trump administration to address border issues. The Department of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness of Canada stated that community protection will be achieved through increased hiring and investment rather than restructuring.

Provincial leaders are now calling for urgent negotiations regarding new police service agreements. Existing local policing contracts for 600 Indigenous communities and 150 municipalities are scheduled to expire in 2032.
