Texas Midterm Candidates Clash Over Cost-of-Living Solutions

Candidates in the Texas midterm elections have made affordability the central theme of their campaigns as rising costs for energy, food, and housing challenge the state's reputation for low living expenses. A poll by the Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas at Austin shows that a plurality of Texans now consider inflation and higher prices the most critical issue facing the state, overtaking immigration in priority for many voters.

Greg Abbott and other Republican candidates, including Senate candidate Ken Paxton, are focusing on supply-side relief. Their proposals include cutting school property taxes and implementing specific tax breaks for housing and healthcare.

Democratic challengers are proposing more direct interventions. State Representative Gina Hinojosa, running for governor, has proposed sending $1,500 checks to every Texas household, while Senate candidate James Talarico has called for the abolition of the gas tax. Other Democratic plans include expanding tax benefits for parents. Policy experts have warned that these direct payments or increased borrowing to fund tax breaks could inadvertently further drive inflation.
