Trump Threatens UK Tariffs and Reconsiders Falkland Islands Support

President Donald Trump threatened to impose significant retaliatory tariffs on the United Kingdom if the British government does not repeal its digital services tax. Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump accused the UK of taking cheap shots at American technology firms, including Meta, Alphabet, Amazon, and Apple, claiming these companies are being targeted by the 2 percent levy. The tax generated roughly £800 million during the 2024-2025 fiscal year.

Leaked Pentagon emails suggest the U.S. viewed revoking support for the islands as a means to punish NATO allies who did not support the Iran campaign. This shift also reflects a broader U.S. effort to pivot focus away from European protection toward South America and Argentina. These frictions precede a four-day state visit by King Charles III to Washington for the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, which Trump believes may help mend bilateral ties.
