NYC Mayor and Israel Clash Ahead of UN General Assembly

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Wednesday that he will not personally attend protests against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the leader's visit for the United Nations General Assembly on September 24. The announcement follows a period of high tension in which Mamdani labeled Netanyahu a "war criminal" and investigated whether the city could execute an International Criminal Court arrest warrant against him. Mamdani later admitted a city mayor lacks the legal authority to execute such a warrant, stating his current focus is on city safety and managing traffic disruptions.

Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon responded by calling for Mamdani's arrest, accusing the mayor of inciting antisemitic chaos and collaborating with enemies of the United States. Danon specifically cited an attempt by the mayor's international affairs commissioner to meet with the Iranian ambassador in July. President Donald Trump also intervened via Truth Social, asserting that Netanyahu will not be arrested while in the United States.

To manage the expected unrest, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced extensive security measures for the General Debate running September 22 through September 28. The NYPD will deploy thousands of officers, including bomb squads and K-9 units, and establish "frozen zones" on First Avenue. Tisch noted that the department expects multiple protests every day, though officials report no specific or credible threats against the assembly.
