UK and France Lead 51-Nation Mission to Reopen Strait of Hormuz

The Government of the United Kingdom and the French Republic are leading a multinational coalition of 51 countries to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The mission follows an Iranian blockade imposed in March 2026, which was triggered by attacks from the United States and Israel. The blockade caused global energy prices to surge and disrupted supply chains, particularly within the Global South.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer and President Emmanuel Macron announced the operation, which involves mine-clearing and the protection of commercial shipping once hostilities conclude. The UK has deployed the HMS Dragon, Typhoon jets, and mine-hunting equipment, while France has deployed the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle.

Despite a ceasefire between the United States and Iran established a month prior, both nations continue to exchange accusations regarding vessel strikes. Tensions remain high as Iran's deputy foreign minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, warned that any warship entering the strait would face a "decisive and immediate response."
