Vladimir Putin Visits Disputed Northern Territories Islands

Russian President Vladimir Putin conducted a surprise visit to the disputed island chain known as the Northern Territories in Japan and the southern Kuril Islands in Russia. This marks the first such visit in his quarter-century rule and has reignited tensions over the archipelago, which Moscow seized from Japan at the end of World War II.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi condemned the visit as "absolutely unacceptable." Despite the protest, the Japanese government has refrained from imposing new penalties because of Japan's reliance on Russian liquefied natural gas. Putin has increased pressure on Tokyo by expanding military exercises in nearby seas and criticizing economic sanctions Japan imposed following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

The diplomatic friction is acutely felt in the Japanese fishing town of Nemuro. While the town serves as a center for Japanese territorial claims, it remains dependent on Russia for trade and fishing rights. Local leadership expressed concern that the escalating tension between the two nations would immediately damage the local economy.
