Donald Trump Suspends Russian Diesel Sanctions and Claims Energy Ceasefire
President Donald Trump suspended sanctions on Russian diesel fuel and announced an energy ceasefire that Russia and Ukraine appeared unaware of.
President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an immediate energy ceasefire, though both warring nations appeared unaware of the arrangement. This claim follows a period of strained relations between the White House and Kyiv, during which Trump criticized Ukraine for failing to end the conflict and stated the country needs a new president.
Earlier on Friday, Trump suspended U.S. sanctions on Russian diesel fuel, a move expected to inject approximately $4 billion into the Russian economy. He justified the decision by citing soaring domestic diesel prices that he believed could imperil Republican candidates in the upcoming midterm elections. Trump claimed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy "wants to make problems for our farmers, our ranchers."
The decision drew sharp criticism from European leaders and members of the U.S. House and Senate, who called the move a "betrayal of our allies." Meanwhile, Russia escalated its military campaign, deploying thousands of drones and glide bombs. Recent Russian strikes in Kramatorsk and Zaporizhzhia killed at least 52 people, including four children. These developments raise concerns over U.S. support for Ukraine as the country faces a winter that could lead to a humanitarian crisis.
