UN Security Council Clashes Over Iran Nuclear Sanctions and War

The United States, serving as president of the UN Security Council, convened a meeting on March 12, 2026, to resume reporting by the 1737 Sanctions Committee regarding Iran's nuclear program. The session exposed deep diplomatic divisions, as the U.S. sought to justify a war launched against Iran two weeks prior. Despite opposition from Russia and China, the council voted 11-2 to proceed with discussions on sanctions.

President Donald Trump claimed U.S. strikes on three nuclear sites in June prevented Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, though reports indicate this claim lacks intelligence support. Meanwhile, Pakistan's representative Asim Iftikhar Ahmad warned that strikes on nuclear facilities under International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards pose severe environmental risks. UN Secretary-General António Guterres described the escalating crisis as a grave threat to international peace and security, as conflict continues to displace between 600,000 and one million Iranian households.
