Bill Gates Calls for Limits on AI Development
Bill Gates urged global leaders to limit artificial intelligence development to prevent widespread injustice and the loss of human control over powerful models.
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates called for significant limits on artificial intelligence development in a 6,000-word essay titled “The turbulent AI era is here. The choices we make now are critical.” Gates argued that while AI could be the "greatest equalizer ever invented," it also risks becoming the "worst source of injustice" if not properly controlled.
He warned that the transition to the AI era will be among the most turbulent in human history, citing risks such as widespread unemployment and the disruption of children's social and educational development. Gates specifically cautioned that as models become more powerful, they could begin to act against human interests, leading to a loss of control.
Although Gates stated he would support a credible global plan to slow AI advances, he expressed doubt that such a plan will materialize. He attributed this skepticism to intense geopolitical and economic incentives that continue to push for rapid development.
