Kushner and Dmitriev Discuss U.S. Investment in Nord Stream
U.S. Special Envoy Jared Kushner held talks with Russia's Kirill Dmitriev regarding American investment in an undamaged segment of the Nord Stream pipeline.
U.S. Special Envoy for Russia Jared Kushner held talks with Russian counterpart Kirill Dmitriev to discuss the potential involvement of a U.S. investor in the Nord Stream pipeline. The negotiations focus on a segment of the pipeline that remained undamaged following the September 2022 attacks. This initiative is part of a broader energy and resource diplomacy strategy under Donald Trump, which includes reported discussions about reopening Nord Stream 2 under American control and oil deals involving the global assets of Lukoil.
These energy talks coincide with a détente between the United States and Belarus. Following sanctions relief, Belarus delivered 30,000 tons of potash to the U.S., while President Alexander Lukashenko proposed joint investment in a fertilizer plant. Additionally, U.S. Special Envoy to Belarus John P. Coale was authorized to negotiate the release of political prisoners.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has reportedly indicated that significant sanctions relief for Russia is contingent upon the conclusion of the conflict in Ukraine. Analysts suggest that these resource-centric partnerships are strategically tied to the eventual resolution of that conflict.
