JD Vance Seeks Peace Framework to Avert Trump's Iran Strikes
Vice President JD Vance sent a letter to Iran to revive peace negotiations as President Donald Trump threatens military attacks after next week's midterm elections.
Vice President JD Vance sent a letter to Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, to establish a framework for peace negotiations. The outreach, directed by President Donald Trump, seeks to avert a short, intense military attack that Trump has threatened to launch following next week's midterm elections.
While Vance privately tests for common ground, Trump has publicly maintained that the administration is not negotiating and has hinted at forthcoming strikes. Diplomatic efforts are hindered by a collapsed June memorandum of understanding regarding the Strait of Hormuz and conflicting demands: the United States requires upfront nuclear concessions, while Iran demands immediate economic relief.
In response to the tension, Rezaei has met with security chiefs from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey to seek de-escalation. This occurs despite Rezaei's previous warnings that Iran could target the United Arab Emirates and regional data centers. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that while Iranian forces are prepared to defend the homeland, the country continues to give diplomacy a chance to succeed.
