Putin Rejects CIA Peace Proposal During Ratcliffe Moscow Visit

Central Intelligence Agency Director John Ratcliffe visited Moscow this week to present Vladimir Putin with a bleak assessment of Russia's military and economic standing and urge a peace deal. The proposal comes as Russia faces slowed battlefield progress, ballooning war spending, and frequent Ukrainian strikes on e-commerce warehouses and oil refineries.

Putin rejected the calls for a peace deal, maintaining that Ukraine's situation is worse and that Kyiv will eventually crumble. He framed Ukrainian attacks as a sign of desperation, stating, "The more difficult the situation on the front lines becomes for the enemy, the more brutal and barbaric are the attacks carried out by the Kyiv regime." Kremlin spokesman Dmitri S. Peskov confirmed that peace talks are currently "firmly on hold."

Russia is experiencing internal strain, including economic anxiety over new taxes and declining public support for the military. The Supreme Court of Russia further tightened political control by barring the antiwar Yabloko party from upcoming parliamentary elections. In response to these pressures, Putin called for national unity, noting that victory depends on the "courage of Russian soldiers and officers."
