NATO Adjusts Posture as Drone Attacks Disrupt Black Sea Shipping

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced defense adjustments after drone attacks on commercial vessels in the Black Sea caused shipping suspensions and economic threats to Bulgaria.

A series of drone attacks on commercial vessels in the Black Sea has disrupted global shipping and energy networks, leading Mark Rutte, the Secretary General of NATO, to announce adjustments to the alliance's deterrence and defense posture. The attacks include a strike on a Comoros-flagged tanker in Romanian waters, a fire on a San Marino-flagged vessel, and strikes off the coast of Bulgaria that left 11 crew members missing and 10 presumed dead.

While Russia and Ukraine both deny involvement, Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev stated the attacks benefit the Russian Federation. The insecurity has caused war-risk insurance premiums to surge from $200,000 to $2.5 million per vessel, prompting approximately 90 percent of shipowners to suspend calls at affected ports. In Bulgaria, this has put five million tonnes of wheat awaiting export at risk and slowed summer tourism bookings from Germany, the UK, and Poland.

In response to the crisis, Bulgaria, Romania, and Trkiye have increased intelligence-sharing and surveillance. The Bulgarian National Assembly approved a €900 million purchase of five German IRIS-T SLM air defense systems, while Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov requested aircraft, air patrols, and counter-drone systems from NATO. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen characterized the situation as another front of escalation in the broader Russia-Ukraine conflict.
