Lukashenko Rules Out Belarusian Entry Into Ukraine War

Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko ruled out direct military intervention in Ukraine and apologized to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy while calling for a negotiated peace.

Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko ruled out the direct entry of Belarusian forces into the war against Ukraine, stating that such an escalation is absolutely unacceptable. In interviews with BelTA and Al Arabiya on June 15 and 16, 2026, Lukashenko cited Belarus's military vulnerability and the risk of creating a 1,500km front line that would likely escalate the conflict into a direct confrontation with NATO.

Lukashenko claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed that Belarusian involvement would do more harm than good. He argued that neither side possesses a military solution due to troop shortages and urged both parties to reach a peaceful agreement through compromises. As part of this shift in tone, Lukashenko issued a public apology to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for previous harsh criticisms that characterized Zelenskyy as an inexperienced leader.

Additionally, Lukashenko claimed that Vladimir Putin was deceived into withdrawing troops from near Kyiv in early 2022. He asserted that the conflict could have ended quickly with a Russian victory, but that the Vatican and a Jewish lobby, including Israelis, persuaded Putin to pull back by misrepresenting Zelenskyy's willingness to seek peace. Moscow has previously maintained that Ukraine abandoned a neutrality treaty following that withdrawal under pressure from former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, a claim Ukraine disputes.
