Democrats and GOP Lawmaker Push to Impeach Pete Hegseth
House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries and Republican Representative Thomas Massie are pursuing the impeachment of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over the war in Iran.
House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries and Republican Representative Thomas Massie are leading a push to impeach Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. The effort follows midterm elections in which Democrats won control of both the House and Senate, a result Vice President JD Vance attributed to an unpopular war in Iran championed by Hegseth.
Jeffries initially called Hegseth the most unqualified secretary of defense in American history before confirming he is a hard yes on an impeachment resolution expected to reach the House floor this week. He accused Hegseth of engineering a reckless and costly war of choice that undermined national security and increased costs for Americans. Representative Massie is preparing to reintroduce a privileged resolution containing eight articles of impeachment, alleging that Hegseth violated the War Powers Resolution of 1973 and leaked war plans to reporters.
President Donald Trump has consistently defended Hegseth, calling the impeachment efforts extortion at the highest level and ordering the Justice Department to investigate those involved. Attorney General Todd Blanche stated the department would defend members of the executive branch. Hegseth has dismissed the proceedings as political theater and the politics of personal destruction, asserting that such tactics did not work against Trump and will not work against him.
