Republicans Use Aggressive Personal Attacks in 2026 Midterms

Republican candidates are employing aggressive personal attacks and targeted outreach to Indian-American voters as the 2026 United States midterm elections conclude.

Republican candidates closed the 2026 midterm elections using a strategy of aggressive personal attacks against Democratic opponents, mirroring the rhetoric of Donald Trump. In Michigan, candidates including Tim Sheehy targeted Dr. Abdul El-Sayed with Islamophobic claims, while Trump described El-Sayed as a "vicious, violent jihadist." In Texas, Trump and JD Vance targeted Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico with insinuations regarding his sexuality and personal habits. In Kansas, Senator Roger Marshall accused opponent Adam Hamilton of "grooming" children.

While the National Republican Senatorial Committee defended these tactics, some Republicans, including Senator Susan Collins and former Senator Jeff Flake, criticized the coarseness of the messaging. Democrats condemned the attacks as dangerous, though the office of Governor Gavin Newsom also utilized personal attacks during the cycle.

Parallel to these attacks, candidates from both parties conducted targeted outreach to Indian-American voters in battleground states. In Texas, James Talarico visited an Indian restaurant in Irving to prepare dosas to contrast his approach with Republican nominee Ken Paxton. Other figures, including Governor Ned Lamont in Connecticut and Senator Cory Booker in New Jersey, attended Diwali celebrations and Hindu temple events to secure support in key states like Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and North Carolina.
