Iran Warns of Expanded War Amid U.S. Peace Outreach
The Government of Iran warns that further U.S. attacks will expand the conflict's geographical scope despite diplomatic outreach from Vice President JD Vance.
The Government of Iran is preparing for renewed military conflict while simultaneously engaging in diplomatic negotiations. On October 31, the Army of the Islamic Republic of Iran warned that any further United States military attacks would expand the geographical scope of the war. This escalation follows a conflict that began in February with U.S.-Israeli strikes that killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, leading to direct confrontations and mutual blockades of Iranian ports and the Strait of Hormuz.
Diplomatic efforts to avert further fighting continue as both the United States and Israel hold critical elections. Vice President JD Vance, acting under the direction of President Donald Trump, sent a letter to Iranian national security adviser Mohsen Rezaei proposing comprehensive peace talks. Additionally, a delegation from the Government of Qatar visited Tehran to mediate between the parties.
Despite these efforts, significant gaps remain. Iran has established seven preconditions for an interim deal, including the release of frozen assets, the lifting of oil sanctions and the U.S. naval blockade, and an end to the war in Lebanon. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump is reportedly considering new strikes against Iran for the post-election period, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to topple the Iranian government.
