Trump Demands Cuban Regime Change and Imposes Wide-Ranging Sanctions

President Donald Trump demanded regime change in Cuba and imposed sweeping sanctions on President Miguel Díaz-Canel and the Cuban military following an ongoing oil blockade.

President Donald Trump announced that the United States requires a change in government in Cuba before providing full assistance to the island, which he characterized as having collapsed and starving. Trump stated that the U.S. intends to handle the situation in Cuba immediately following the conclusion of military operations in Iran, suggesting U.S. forces could make a stopover at the island on their return from the Middle East.

On June 4, 2026, the U.S. Treasury Department executed Executive Order 14404, imposing sanctions on Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, his wife Lis Cuesta Peraza, his stepson, and descendants of former President Raúl Castro. Five entities were also targeted, including the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (MINFAR) and the military conglomerate GAESA. These measures freeze U.S.-based assets and prohibit U.S. citizens and banks from conducting business with the listed parties. The sanctions follow a fuel embargo since January and recent criminal murder indictments against Raúl Castro regarding a 1996 aircraft shootdown.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio described Cuba as a failed state and a national security threat, warning foreign companies to cease activities with sanctioned bodies. This prompt led Spanish hotel chains Iberostar and Meliá to stop managing GAESA-linked hotels. Cuban President Díaz-Canel and Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez condemned the actions as an imperialist onslaught and a vile interventionist plan designed to escalate conflict between the two nations.
