Donald Trump Bans Ukraine from Manufacturing Patriot Missiles
President Donald Trump prohibited Ukraine from manufacturing Patriot missile systems despite a critical interceptor shortage and offers of plant ownership to US defense firms.
Ukraine has nearly exhausted its supply of US-made Patriot missile interceptors, leaving critical defense systems idle. Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine possesses only 1% of the US stockpile, while 5% is required to survive the coming winter. This shortage is driven by a production gap; Lockheed Martin produced 620 interceptors in 2025, while coalition forces used an average of 225 per day during the first four days of a conflict with Iran.
To address the deficit, Zelensky offered Lockheed Martin and Raytheon full ownership of any manufacturing plants established within Ukraine. While Donald Trump previously offered licensing for local production during a June NATO summit in Ankara, he later expressed doubts about the arrangement. The White House maintained that no guarantees had been made, citing the importance of US technology security.
President Donald Trump has now officially decided to prohibit Ukraine from manufacturing the American-designed Patriot missile system. Critics argue this decision provides strategic advantages to Russia and weakens the ability of NATO to counter potential attacks ordered by Vladimir Putin. Supporters of local production point to the system's mobility and its ability to destroy targets without GPS networks, as seen in the January 2024 destruction of a Russian AWACS A-50u jet.
