Hakeem Jeffries and Jared Kushner Meet to Discuss Policy
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries met privately with Trump adviser Jared Kushner in New York to discuss housing, immigration, and the cost of living.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries met privately with Jared Kushner, a top outside adviser to President Donald Trump, in New York City to explore potential areas of common ground. The discussions focused on immigration, housing, and the high cost of living. During the meeting, Kushner suggested that Jeffries meet with White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
The engagement comes as Republicans face polling disadvantages ahead of the midterm elections, a cycle in which Jeffries is positioned to become Speaker if Democrats secure the House majority. Despite the private dialogue, the relationship between the administration and Democratic leadership remains hostile. President Trump has previously described Jeffries as a "thug" and a "low IQ" person, while Jeffries has characterized the president as corrupt.
Jeffries maintained that any potential agreements with the administration would require "transformational policy change" to address the affordability crisis. He emphasized that the Democratic priority remains fighting for an affordable America, while questioning whether Republicans are willing to join those efforts.
