Donald Trump rejected a proposal from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi intended to end the war and fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The proposal was submitted via Qatari mediators during the United Nations General Assembly.
Trump stated that Iran "overplayed their hand" and characterized the offer as something he would have only accepted a year ago. Despite the rejection, the president expects indirect negotiations between American and Iranian mediators to continue this week, with a new round potentially starting Monday.
Foreign Minister Araghchi noted he is still awaiting an official response through the mediators. Qatari officials spent the weekend meeting with both parties separately to develop a compromise proposal. Trump indicated he remains open to renewing strikes against Iran while the diplomatic process continues.
