Trump Imports Russian Diesel to Combat Surging Fuel Prices

President Donald Trump announced a deal to import 300,000 tons of Russian diesel and eased tax-exempt fuel restrictions to lower costs for U.S. consumers and farmers.

President Donald Trump announced a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to immediately import 300,000 tons of Russian diesel fuel to lower surging heating oil and diesel prices. To further reduce domestic costs, Trump signed an executive order easing restrictions on tax-exempt diesel, a move that follows his previous threats to ban fuel exports.

Global diesel prices have spiked due to supply disruptions from the U.S.-Iran war in the Strait of Hormuz and Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian refineries. These shortages have pushed heating oil prices to an average of $5.97 per gallon in Maine, with the Energy Information Administration expecting heating oil households to pay 21% more than last winter. The price surge is also straining global agriculture; in California, diesel prices have reached approximately $7.90 per gallon, leading 40% of farmers to reduce field work.

The import deal has faced backlash from a bipartisan group of senators who oppose lifting sanctions on Russia during its war with Ukraine. Meanwhile, the Group of Seven and its partners have agreed to release emergency stockpiles to stabilize the market. The International Energy Agency reported that global buyers drew down inventories in the third quarter as disruptions to Middle Eastern and Russian exports persisted.
