Donald Trump Dismisses Iran Ceasefire as Waste of Time
President Donald Trump criticized a previous ceasefire with Iran as a waste of time, prompting condemnation from Tehran and support from Israel.
President Donald Trump dismissed a summer ceasefire with Iran as a "waste of time" during campaign events in Mississippi and Texas. Trump stated he agreed to the pause on the advice of experts despite his own reservations, arguing the arrangement failed to provide a lasting resolution. He claimed the United States has since inflicted a severe defeat on Tehran, asserting that Iran was only two weeks away from acquiring nuclear weapons before the U.S. military campaign.
The conflict began on February 28 with joint operations by the United States and Israel. A June memorandum of understanding led to a ceasefire that collapsed on July 8 when the U.S. resumed airstrikes, citing Iranian violations regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Trump maintained that the U.S. currently controls the strait and that no Iranian vessel has breached the blockade for several months.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei condemned the remarks, accusing Washington of contempt for diplomacy and reneging on international obligations. In response to the tensions, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei met with security officials to emphasize the necessity of maintaining control over the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel has a historic opportunity with Trump to remove the threat of the Iranian regime.
