UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres Visits Cyprus to Revive Peace Talks

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Cyprus on July 27 for a three-day mission to support the revival of the stalled peace process. This visit marks the first time a serving UN chief has visited the island since 2010. Guterres is scheduled to hold separate meetings on July 28 with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot President Tufan Erhurman, followed by a private dinner and a trilateral meeting on July 29 within the UN-controlled buffer zone.

The diplomatic push follows a landslide victory by Erhurman in the October elections in northern Cyprus, which challenged previous Ankara-backed leadership. However, the peace process remains complicated by conflicting visions for the island's future. While the Greek Cypriot administration favors a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation, the Turkish Cypriot leadership and Turkey advocate for a two-state settlement based on sovereign equality.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan continues to oppose unification, and Turkish Cypriot Prime Minister Ünal Üstel has urged the UN to abandon the federation model and recognize the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Despite these tensions, the UN mission aims to facilitate a sustainable settlement for the decades-old dispute, although no formal proposal has been announced.
