China Imposes Trade Sanctions Following U.S. Technology and Labor Bans

The Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China announced a broad package of retaliatory trade measures on August 5, 2026, responding to U.S. tariffs and security restrictions. China implemented tighter export controls on drones and key components, requiring strict case-by-case reviews for shipments to the U.S. Additionally, Beijing blacklisted several American entities, including Applied DNA Sciences, Stratum Reservoir, Altana Technologies, Verite Group, and Compliance Testing LLC, for their roles in enforcing U.S. sanctions related to Xinjiang and aiding the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

These countermeasures follow an FCC ban on foreign-made drones, humanoid robots, and power inverters, as well as a U.S. Department of Homeland Security move to add 43 Chinese companies to the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act entity list. China also launched a national security investigation into imported office imaging equipment and restricted U.S. companies from issuing certain safety certifications for electronics.

The escalation threatens a trade truce established in October 2025 between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping. While the U.S. administration has threatened sanctions over intellectual property concerns following the release of high-performance AI models from Chinese firms like Alibaba and DeepSeek, President Trump indicated he is weighing these threats against the need for safety controls to ensure the U.S. does not fall behind in AI leadership. The diplomatic friction occurs ahead of President Xi's scheduled visit to the United States on September 24.
