Sergey Lavrov Visits Tehran to Mediate Iran-US Conflict

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov visited Tehran to mediate the war between Iran, the United States, and Israel while expanding bilateral economic and strategic partnerships.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov visited Tehran on October 19, 2026, to conduct high-level consultations with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The visit follows a series of three meetings between President Vladimir Putin and President Pezeshkian within a single month, including a recent encounter in Awaza, Turkmenistan.

Moscow is positioning itself as a mediator in the ongoing war between Iran, the United States, and Israel, which began in February with US-Israeli strikes on Iran. The conflict has centered on the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran targets unauthorized vessels and Washington maintains a naval counter-blockade on Iranian ports. The Russian Foreign Ministry characterized the situation as an acute international crisis triggered by unlawful US and Israeli aggression.

Beyond mediation, the talks focused on advancing a comprehensive strategic partnership. Lavrov and Iranian officials reviewed the implementation of agreements regarding trade, investment, and joint projects in energy, logistics, and transport. The two nations also sought to strengthen coordination within the United Nations, BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, and the Eurasian Economic Union to ensure regional stability without external interference.
