Japan Coast Guard Orders Chinese Research Vessel to Cease Operations

The Japan Coast Guard ordered the Chinese research vessel Xiang Yang Hong 22 to cease operations after it entered Japan's exclusive economic zone near the disputed Senkaku Islands on March 30, 2026. The vessel was detected 37 to 40 miles west-northwest of Uotsuri Island, where it deployed pipe-like and wire-like equipment into the sea.

Japanese patrol vessels issued radio warnings to the ship, stating that scientific oceanographic research without Japan's consent is not permitted. The islands are administered by Tokyo but are claimed by Beijing, which refers to them as the Diaoyu.

This maritime incident occurs during a period of heightened bilateral tension. Relations have strained following comments from Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in November regarding potential military intervention if China attacks Taiwan. In response, Beijing tightened trade restrictions and discouraged travel to Japan.
