Trump Suspends Russia Sanctions to Purchase Diesel Reserves
President Donald Trump suspended energy sanctions on Russia to purchase diesel reserves in an effort to lower U.S. fuel prices before mid-term elections.
President Donald Trump reached an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin to purchase previously sanctioned Russian diesel reserves to lower fuel costs in the United States. The deal follows a period of extreme price volatility that saw U.S. diesel prices hit an all-time high in September. To facilitate the purchase, the Trump administration suspended energy sanctions on Russia until April.
Despite the deal, U.S. and European diesel futures rose 5% on Tuesday, reaching their highest levels in weeks. Market analysts expressed skepticism regarding the delivery of the oil, noting that the Russian reserves would cover less than two weeks of U.S. demand. In tandem with the Russian deal, Trump signed an executive order easing restrictions on tax-exempt red dye off-road diesel and pressured European allies to release their own reserves.
The International Energy Agency clarified that Europe is not releasing new reserves, while industry groups warned truckers against using red dye fuel due to tax uncertainties. Reports indicate that Vladimir Putin is leveraging the agreement to fund the Russian military and pressure the U.S. for further concessions, including the acquisition of Greenland, reduced support for Ukraine, and the easing of sanctions on Cuba and Europe.
