James Talarico Wins First Texas Senate Seat for Democrats Since 1988

Democrat James Talarico won a Texas Senate seat with a record-breaking vote total, the first such victory for the party in the state since 1988.

Democrat James Talarico won a Texas Senate seat in the November 2026 election, marking the first time a Democrat has secured a Senate seat in the state since 1988. Talarico received 5,445,185 votes, a total that surpasses the Texas vote counts of previous Democratic presidential nominees Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and Hillary Clinton.

The victory occurred alongside a general decline in voter turnout, with approximately 9.89 million votes counted compared to 11.29 million in 2024. Republican candidate Ken Paxton saw a 29% decrease in votes compared to the performance of Ted Cruz in 2024.

While some observers attribute the shift to population growth and an increase in college-educated residents, analysis suggests that growth alone does not explain the surge in Democratic support. Simultaneously, reports emerged on November 5 alleging that the Government of Texas processed over 2.9 million new voter registrations between 2022 and 2024 without requiring proof of citizenship.
