CIA Director John Ratcliffe Meets Russian Intelligence Chief in Moscow

CIA Director John Ratcliffe traveled to Moscow on August 27 to meet with Russian foreign intelligence chief Sergei Naryshkin. While President Donald Trump characterized the visit as "semi-routine" and focused on ending the war in Ukraine, other reports indicate the mission served as a warning to the Kremlin against testing NATO's eastern flank or conducting a "limited assault."

Ratcliffe reportedly warned of additional sanctions if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed to shipping. The Kremlin dismissed these claims, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov labeling reports of a NATO warning as "scare stories" and attributing the tension to an "aggressive policy" from European nations.

The diplomatic meeting occurs as the Pentagon reviews the status of 80,000 U.S. troops stationed in Europe. This review coincides with increased Russian military readiness in Belarus and the expansion of military infrastructure near Baltic borders.
