Trump Initiates Denuclearization Talks With Russia and China
President Donald Trump announced the United States is conducting talks with Russia and China to denuclearize the world's largest nuclear stockpiles.
Donald Trump announced Thursday that the United States is conducting talks with Russia and China to denuclearize the nations holding the largest stockpiles of nuclear weapons. In an interview with Newsmax, Trump stated his desire to denuclearize and confirmed he has spoken with Chinese President Xi Jinping regarding the matter.
Trump expressed concern that China's nuclear capabilities could catch up to those of the United States within the next five years. These discussions occur after the expiration of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) earlier this year. The 2010 agreement had previously been extended for five years by Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin.
Because the treaty has expired, any further extension of the limits on nuclear stockpiles now requires a voluntary executive decision.
