Trump Threatens Canada With Tariffs Over Wildfire Smoke

President Donald Trump threatened to add pollution-related costs to Canadian import tariffs, accusing Canada of willful negligence in its forest management. The proposal follows weeks of Canadian wildfire smoke degrading air quality for more than 100 million people across the U.S. Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and Great Lakes regions.

Trump mocked Canada's wildfire response on Truth Social by sharing an AI-generated image of a massive air filter barrier along the border. His criticisms were echoed by four Republican members of Congress, who sent a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney alleging that Canada has chronically under-invested in forest thinning.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford rejected the tariff threats and challenged the administration's narrative. Ford stated that the president should perform due diligence, noting that one of the largest fires in the current crisis actually originated in Minnesota. Prime Minister Mark Carney maintained that Canada is doing everything possible to control the wildfires.
