U.S. Threatens Sanctions Over Moonshot AI IP Theft Allegations

The United States and China are engaged in a diplomatic conflict over allegations of industrial-scale intellectual property theft. Scott Bessent, the U.S. Treasury Secretary, and White House OSTP Director Michael Kratsios alleged that the Beijing-based company Moonshot AI used fraudulent accounts and servers in Thailand to "distill" Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 model to develop its own Kimi K3 model.

U.S. officials claim Moonshot AI employed a sophisticated platform to bypass security and steal intellectual property. In response, the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China rejected the claims as lacking factual and legal basis, characterizing the U.S. position as AI hegemonism. The ministry asserted that U.S. companies also distill Chinese models and warned that Beijing would take necessary measures to protect its interests.

Moonshot AI denied the allegations, stating that the performance of Kimi K3 resulted from original architectural changes. While the U.S. government considers adding the firm to the Commerce Department's Entity List, some industry leaders, including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, have reportedly opposed banning Chinese open-source models.
