Trump Pauses Iran Strikes Amid Disputed Peace Talks

President Donald Trump postponed military strikes on Iranian power plants following claimed negotiations, though Iran denies the talks as the conflict continues to disrupt global energy markets.

The conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran entered its fourth week in March 2026, following a February 28 joint strike that killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The war has resulted in over 2,000 deaths across Iran and Lebanon and triggered a global energy crisis as Iran effectively blockaded the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting roughly 20% of global oil and LNG supplies.

Donald Trump issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz under threat of obliterating Iranian power plants. However, on March 23, he announced a five-day postponement of these strikes, claiming "very good and productive conversations" with Iranian officials. Trump asserted that a 15-point peace plan was in place, including an Iranian commitment to abandon nuclear weapons. The Government of Iran categorically denied these negotiations, with Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf labeling the claims "fake news" intended to manipulate financial markets.

Despite the diplomatic claims, military hostilities escalated. The Israel Defense Forces launched extensive strikes against infrastructure in Tehran and expanded ground operations in southern Lebanon. Iran retaliated with missile waves targeting Tel Aviv and U.S. military bases in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the UAE. To stabilize markets, the U.S. Treasury temporarily lifted sanctions on some Iranian oil, while the International Energy Agency coordinated a 400-million-barrel emergency reserve release.

U.S. forces continue to increase their regional presence, deploying thousands of Marines and weighing the seizure of Kharg Island. While Trump suggested a target date of April 9 to end the war, Iranian officials maintain that any resolution requires full reparations and the expulsion of U.S. forces from the region.
