House Democrats Set Healthcare and AI Priorities for New Congress

House Democrats plan to prioritize Medicaid expansion, AI regulation, and reversing Trump tariffs as they prepare for the January 3 swearing-in of the new Congress.

House Democratic leaders are preparing for the January 3 swearing-in of the new Congress with a legislative agenda focused on healthcare, foreign policy, and technology. Holding a majority of over 250 seats, Hakeem Jeffries, the incoming House speaker, intends to prioritize boosting Medicaid, restoring Affordable Care Act tax subsidies, ending the war with Iran, and reversing trade tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.

Jeffries has established working groups to address the costs of housing, energy, groceries, and caregiving. Simultaneously, Representative Ted Lieu is pursuing legislation and public hearings to establish guardrails for the artificial intelligence industry and data centers. Representative Greg Casar has urged the party to target big corporations and billionaires alongside the Trump administration to demonstrate a pro-worker and pro-consumer stance.

Despite their House strength, Democrats face a 60-vote threshold in the Senate and potential presidential vetoes. Senate Majority Leader John Thune warned that this divide could lead to two years of political paralysis. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer maintains the party will push its agenda regardless of presidential cooperation, noting that a veto would only highlight existing national divisions.
