Marco Rubio Chairs G20 Foreign Ministers Meeting in Atlanta
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is hosting G20 foreign ministers in Atlanta to discuss global security, trade crises, and North Korean missile launches.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is chairing the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Atlanta on Friday and Saturday. The gathering serves as a precursor to the G20 Leaders’ Summit scheduled for December in Miami. Discussions focus on global food and energy concerns, supply chain resilience, and freedom of navigation in the Red Sea, Black Sea, South China Sea, and Strait of Hormuz.
The summit is marked by deep divisions over U.S. tariffs, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran. The attendance of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has caused friction among Western allies and created domestic political tension for President Donald Trump ahead of Tuesday's midterm elections. While Russia advocates for a multipolar world, other members remain concerned over attacks on Ukraine. Additionally, the U.S. excluded Ukraine and South Africa from the invitee list, limiting attendance to formal G20 members.
On the sidelines of the summit, Rubio is meeting with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi. The trilateral group intends to coordinate responses to North Korea's recent missile launches and its strengthening ties with China. This meeting will conclude with the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation for the Trilateral Arctic-Pacific Partnership, focusing on maritime safety and energy resources. To secure the event, the Atlanta Department of Transportation implemented extensive road closures around the Loews Atlanta Hotel in Midtown.
