Michael Marra Admits Scottish Labour Far From 2031 Victory

Scottish Labour leader Michael Marra stated that his party is a "long way" from being able to win the 2031 Holyrood election. Speaking at a Politico event during the Labour conference in Liverpool, Marra described the party's performance in the May election as a "very poor result," which contrasted with the "handsome victory" secured by John Swinney and the Scottish National Party.

Marra attributed the failure to a "collapse in popularity" under former Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and admitted that the party's focus on constituency seats was "the wrong strategy in the end." He noted that the rate of popularity loss under the previous prime minister was uniquely challenging in history.

Despite these setbacks, Marra expressed optimism regarding current Prime Minister Andy Burnham. He described Burnham as the most popular politician in Scotland since Nicola Sturgeon and stated that the Prime Minister is working to rebuild the party's connection with voters.
