Trump Vows Heavy Strikes as Iran Conflict Sparks Regional War

The conflict between the United States and Iran has escalated into a regional war following a series of strikes in late July 2026. After Iran launched an unprecedented first-strike missile attack against U.S. forces, Donald Trump authorized a heavy wave of strikes targeting Bandar Abbas, Kish Island, and Qeshm Island. The president affirmed that the United States will continue to strike Iran to win the conflict, which originally began in February.

The war expanded as Saudi Arabia joined the U.S. in offensive strikes against Iran-backed militias and weapons depots in Iraq, resulting in the deaths of 20 members of the Popular Mobilization Forces. Saudi Arabia also announced a fourteen-nation Maritime Defense Alliance to protect shipping in the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz. Simultaneously, Houthi militants in Yemen implemented a blockade of Saudi-linked commercial vessels in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in retaliation for an airstrike on Sanaa airport.

Further instability emerged when a drone struck gas vessels at Egypt's port of Damietta; Iran denied involvement in the attack. Diplomatically, Turkish and Saudi Arabian foreign ministers discussed efforts to end the hostilities on July 31. In the U.S., the Senate voted 50–49 to block a measure that would have forced the president to end hostilities without congressional authorization, effectively preserving executive war powers.
