US and Iran Exchange Strikes Over Strait of Hormuz

The United States of America and Iran have entered a new phase of military conflict following a month-long lull in a war that began in February. Hostilities resumed on August 31 when U.S. Central Command struck Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps sites in southern Iran, including rocket launchers on Larak Island. By September 2, the U.S. conducted a second round of strikes targeting radar systems and mine-laying capabilities along Iran's southern coast.

Iran retaliated with volleys of drones and Kheibar Shekan medium-range ballistic missiles targeting U.S. military assets in Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Erbil, Iraq. Tehran has condemned the U.S. for striking a wedding ceremony in Sirik, which killed four people, including a child, and wounded over 50. Iranian officials characterized the incident as a war crime, while the U.S. denied targeting civilians. President Donald Trump stated the strikes were retaliation for Iranian attempts to plant sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz. The escalation has triggered a surge in global energy prices as both nations fight for control of the strategic waterway, while the U.S. has launched a global economic pressure campaign against Iranian financial interests.
