Harmeet Dhillon Resigns as DOJ Civil Rights Chief

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon resigned from the Justice Department following Democratic victories in the midterm elections and internal conflicts over legal strategies.

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon resigned as head of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division on November 5, 2026. Her departure is the first by a senior official following the Democratic victory in the midterm elections. While Attorney General Todd Blanche praised her for enforcing the law without fear or favor, reports indicate the resignation followed conflicts with leadership and a controversial 60 Minutes interview where Dhillon downplayed noncitizen voting.

Dhillon told Fox News she resigned of her own volition three weeks prior to the midterms but delayed the announcement at the request of White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. During her 18-month tenure, she shifted the division's focus from protecting racial minorities and police misconduct investigations toward conservative priorities, including campus antisemitism, DEI initiatives, and religious liberty. She oversaw the largest deployment of election monitors in DOJ history and charged 112 noncitizens across 20 states with illegal voting offenses.

Her leadership sparked a massive exodus of career staff, with reports indicating between 70% and 75% of the workforce left. Dhillon replaced approximately 300 attorneys with ideological allies, a move Representative Jamie Raskin characterized as full blown political purges. While President Donald Trump and Todd Blanche defended her record, critics and the NAACP accused her of weaponizing the division for partisan goals. Incoming congressional Democrats plan to investigate these staffing changes and the department's actions starting in January.
