Todd Blanche Grants Donald Trump Immunity From IRS Audits
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche granted Donald Trump and his family sweeping immunity from IRS audits following a Justice Department settlement.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche granted Donald Trump and his family comprehensive immunity from Internal Revenue Service audits. The protections resulted from a Justice Department settlement designed to resolve a lawsuit Donald Trump filed against a government agency under his own control.
This audit shield covers previous tax returns for the president, his family members, and business affiliates. The agreement prevents the government from challenging past tax positions, a move that could potentially save the president tens of millions of dollars.
While Senate Republicans previously protested a $1.8 billion fund for victims of federal overreach, leading Blanche to abandon that project, they have remained largely silent regarding the tax immunity. A Democratic effort to cancel these protections failed on a voice vote. Meanwhile, Judge Kathleen M. Williams of the Southern District of Florida is investigating whether lawyers for the president deceived the court during the original legal proceedings.
