US Imposes 50% Tariffs on $20 Billion in Canadian Goods

Donald Trump implemented 50% tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian goods, sparking retaliation from Canada and internal ideological conflict within the American right.

The United States has imposed 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion of Canadian goods after trade negotiations collapsed. In response, the Treasury Board of Canada suspended trade talks and announced plans for dollar-for-dollar retaliation, increasing the likelihood of a prolonged trade war.

The move has triggered an internal ideological rift within the American far-right regarding the administration's economic nationalism. Costin Alamariu, an influential writer known as Bronze Age Pervert, published an essay criticizing the use of tariffs to revive 1950s-style manufacturing. Alamariu argues that these industrial policies prioritize social welfare over economic dynamism and effectively cede the future to China.

Alamariu specifically targeted Vice President JD Vance and other postliberal intellectuals, claiming they are driven by a managerial class. He contends that domestic regulations hinder the U.S. more than foreign competition and urges the administration to prioritize merit and high-quality production to maintain global dominance.
