United States Withdraws From Global Disinformation Agreements

The United States has withdrawn from international agreements with approximately 22 countries, primarily in Europe and Africa, that were established to jointly combat foreign disinformation. The United States Department of State notified participating nations last week that it is terminating these Biden-era memoranda of understanding.

These agreements were previously managed by the Global Engagement Center, which was disbanded in April after congressional Republicans blocked its funding. Secretary of State Marco Rubio characterized the center as a tool for political suppression used to censor American voices.

This withdrawal is part of a wider initiative by President Donald Trump to dismantle institutions he views as vehicles for censorship. Related actions include the defunding of the United States Agency for Global Media and efforts to lobby against the European Union's Digital Services Act.
