Ukraine Airspace Warnings Trigger Moscow Flight Suspensions

Moscow's Vnukovo and Sheremetyevo airports suspended arrivals and departures for two consecutive nights on September 2 and 3, 2026. The disruptions followed warnings from Volodymyr Zelensky, who stated that Russian skies are becoming completely dangerous for civilian aviation due to expanded Ukrainian long-range drone operations targeting military and energy infrastructure.

Ukraine formally notified the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) of the danger and called for a complete prohibition of civilian flights over Russia. Russia's Federal Air Transport Agency, Rosaviatsia, rejected these warnings as lacking legal force, insisting that aviation infrastructure continues to operate normally. Russian Transport Minister Andrei Nikitin stated that authorities are coordinating with the Defense Ministry and National Guard to strengthen airport security.

At the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Vladimir Putin labeled Zelensky's warnings as state terrorism and vowed to intensify attacks on Ukraine. While Putin suggested there is a chance for peace, he asserted that the conflict must be resolved exclusively by Russia and Ukraine. Simultaneously, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte warned that Russia is becoming increasingly reckless, citing a suspected hybrid attack at Germany's Leipzig airport and missile activity along Europe's eastern flank.
