Zelenskyy Urges Trump to Sell Patriot Missile Stocks

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appealed to U.S. President Donald Trump to sell Ukraine a portion of the United States' Patriot PAC-3 interceptor missile stocks. Zelenskyy stated that acquiring 5% of U.S. stocks would allow Ukraine to survive the winter and save lives, while 10% would enable the destruction of all Russian ballistic missiles. This request follows a critical shortage in which Ukraine reportedly possesses only 1% of the necessary interceptors, with 2026 shipments reaching only one-third of 2025 levels.

The shortage coincides with Russia doubling its monthly ballistic missile launches, utilizing Iskander-M and Kinzhal variants, including approximately 150 missiles supplied by North Korea. During an August 1 attack, Ukraine intercepted only one of 27 ballistic missiles. U.S. stockpiles have been depleted by up to a third due to a five-month war with Iran that began in February.

While President Donald Trump previously signaled a decision to grant production licenses for domestic manufacturing, he later cautioned that the U.S. must be "careful" with technology transfers. Zelenskyy expressed skepticism regarding these licensing proposals. To reduce dependence on the U.S., Ukraine is collaborating with European firms on the "Freya" missile defense project, with a prototype expected in early 2027. Meanwhile, the conflict continues to escalate, with recent Russian strikes on port infrastructure in Izmail following Ukrainian attacks on grain terminals in Novorossiysk.
