Ukraine Reclaims Territory Using Logistical Lockdown Strategy
Ukraine reclaimed more territory than it lost in May 2026 by using drone strikes to disrupt Russian supply lines and fuel reserves.
Ukrainian forces reversed a trend of Russian net gains in May 2026 by implementing a logistical lockdown strategy. Oleksandr Syrskii, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, reported a net gain of nearly 100 square kilometers, though the Institute for the Study of War estimated these gains could be as high as 240 square kilometers.
The strategy focused on disrupting Russian supply lines through drone strikes on ammunition and fuel warehouses. These operations reduced military traffic on the M-14 motorway and forced Russian forces to rely on routes through Crimea. Ukrainian strikes on the E105 bridge and ambushes at Armyansk created severe fuel shortages, leading to troop evacuations and the abandonment of positions on the Kinburn Spit due to lack of food and fuel.
Despite these tactical gains, Russian forces continued to advance into eastern Kostyantynivka in the Donetsk region. While Russia struggles with recruitment for unmanned systems units and faces rising casualties, Vladimir Putin has prioritized capturing the remaining one-fifth of the Donetsk territory. In response to the escalating conflict, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for direct talks with Putin and met with intermediary Roman Abramovich.
